Arthur Numan in Z14 polo low resBorn and bred in Heemskerk on 14 December 1969. By far the calmest of the bunch. But definitely not the least! With his 45 international games, he takes first place in our Fellows United international ranking.
Numan made his debut in the season of 1987/88 at HFC Haarlem. He played 91 games until he left for FC Twente in 1990/91, where he scored four goals in 20 matches.
In 1991/92, Numan played 29 times for the so-called Tukkers (people from Twente) and scored three times. Due to this reliable defensive qualities, he had sparked interest from PSV, which bought him from Twente in 1992 for no less than 2,8 million Dutch guilders (about €1,27 million). For PSV, Numan played an impressive 179 matches (27 goals) during the seasons of 1992/93 through 1997/98.
In 1998, Numan was relocated to the Scottish Glasgow Rangers for 17 million Dutch guilders (about €7,71 million). With the Rangers, Numan celebrated his biggest successes. He won the Scottish competition twice, the Scottish cup once and the League cup once. During his time in Glasgow, he made 115 appearances and scored three times.
Numan appeared for the Dutch national team 45 times. Coached by Dick Advocaat, he made his debut for Oranje on 14 October 1992 in the World Cup qualification game against Poland (2-2). In that particular game, Numan was replaced by Gerald Vanenburg after just 40 minutes. He also appeared during the European Championships in England in 1996, where they lost to France in the quarter finales. Numan appeared again during the World Cup in the US (1994), France (1998) and the European Championships in the Netherlands and Belgium in 2000. However, Numan never scored for Oranje. In 2003, he put an end to his career.
In 2008, Numan became team leader and assistant trainer for Holland B under Johan Neeskens. After a year, Holland B was discontinued and from July 2009 onwards, he fulfilled the same position at Young Oranje under trainer Cor Pot. Furthermore, he also became a scout for various clubs. For instance, in 2001 with Aston Villa and, at the moment, at AZ from Alkmaar.
