Michael Mols
If we had to name anyone that would fit in with Fellows United, it would be Michael Mols. Friend and colleague of Arthur Numan and most photographed model during our first photoshoot! Mols starts out as a striker at various amateur clubs in and around Amsterdam and at the youth training of Ajax. In 1991, he leaves for Cambuur Leeuwarden, who go on to become champion of the Dutch First Division. He scores 13 goals in 43 games.
In 1993, Mols transfers to Enschede and plays over 3 seasons (108 games) wearing the colours of Twente, scoring 26 goals and making his debut for the Dutch national team coached by Guus Hiddink. Four years later, he transfers to FC Utrecht, where he earns the title of top scorer no less than 3 times. Mols scores 49 goals in 94 games during 3 seasons in Utrecht, where he’s still unprecedentedly popular amongst fans who gave him the honorary title “FC Utrecht Legend”.
After his legendary time at Utrecht, he crosses the border to go play for the Glasgow Rangers. During his first season in Scotland, he wastes no time and scores goal after goal. In 1999, during a Champions League game against Bayern München, he has an unfortunate collision with Bayern goalie Oliver Kahn. He ends up with a severe knee injury and is out for the rest of the season. A breaking point in Mols career, considering that at that time he was becoming a true asset to the Dutch national team.
After 5 seasons with the Rangers, Mols returns to the Netherlands in the 2004/2005 season to start cutting back on his career. For him, a logical step was to return to FC Utrecht. In the summer of 2005, he signs a 1-year contact with ADO The Hague. After another year with The Hague, Feyenoord makes it clear they want Michael Mols on their team.
In the summer of 2007, Feyenoord announces that he will be transferring as pinch hitter to the Kuip stadium, where he is presented as the replacement of Pierre van Hooijdonk, who retired in the summer of 2007. On 1 September 2007, Michael Mols plays his first game for Feyenoord and manages to land the title for number 1 striker in the later years of his career and he turns out to be invaluable to Feyenoord during the competition and finales of the Dutch KNVB Cup.
